Freedom as a female

Updated: Sep 18

Being a girl in the 21st century, I have always wondered what it would be like to be free. Nobody would stop you from doing anything. The freedom to go outside, roam around, wear whatever you want to, having no curfew. You would be safe, at any hour of the day.

You ever wonder what it’d be like driving alone at 3 am to the beach in your shorts, to walk on the wet, oceanic sand? All alone..

I wish this hypothetical situation could actually exist. I know it sounds like I’m exaggerating, but I personally don’t feel safe traveling in a rickshaw after 9pm. I can’t go to a party and feel safe enough to be back home on my own. I need someone to pick me because it's scary being alone on a deserted road.

Reading the news everyday breaks my heart. Crime against women in the Capital increased by 63.3% in the first six months of 2021 as compared to 2020, data shared by Delhi Police. The data states that rape cases saw an increase of 43% from 580 till June 15 last year to 833 this year, molestation jumped by 39% from 733 to 1,022, kidnapping of women from 1,026 to 1,580, abduction of women from 46 to 159, and dowry deaths from 47 to 56. The Odisha rape victim was just 3-year-old, Bandra victim was 8-year-old, Hathras victim was just 19, Bulandshahar girl who was raped and then set on fire was also a 12-year-old. The list can go on and on…

Freedom as a female is really a dream in today’s day and age. With the youth being educated on sexual assault and rape, it will hopefully have a positive impact in the latter years. Till then, I guess there is no driving alone at 3am to the beach in your shorts to walk on the wet sand.
