Hypocrisy

We all speak so profoundly of change,

Change goes hand in hand with progress.

We speak of humans being ever-evolving,

Yet, we ignore medieval gender roles that remain prevailing.

We all speak so profoundly of change,

But each day, I see my mother balance housework and finances,

While my father continues to remain the sole breadwinner.

Why alone does my father work, while my mother cooks our dinner?

We all speak so profoundly of change.

However, each time I visit my grandparents –

I see my grandma serve my grandpa his food at the table,

Which seems bizarre since he is just as able.

We all speak so profoundly of change,

But I don’t hear anyone speaking of the domestic abuse that the aunty in the flat above me goes through.

Neither do I see anyone stopping her husband each time he returns home drunk after a stressful meeting.

Each time I ask my mother if we can do something, her standard response is, “We don’t really know what’s happening.”

How dare we speak so profoundly of change,

When all we do is preach, not practice.

How much longer will it take

For our justice system to wake?
