Kappa They Called it

A duck like being,

with a flat plate for a hat

A short sharp beak it has,

with a hard shell on its back

Surrounded in the mists of fear,

kappa, kawaharo, kawatori

known by its many names

The puller of horses,

The boy of the river,

The tiger of the water,

The spirit of the sea.

Just the thought strikes

fear in hearts of those who know him

and awakens curiosity in the minds

of many.

A legend? A myth? A folktale? A reality?

No one knows what they saw,

but kappa they called it.
