Writing is hard

It's so easy to make up stories, plots and characters in my head. Their dialogues, how they would be, what they would do. All you have to do is think, after all. " I think, therefore I am"

So simple! So fun!

Oh, but it's so hard to put it all into words!

Even though I think of it all in words, putting it on paper is... rough and exhausting! Changing one simple detail can lead to a cascade of edits. It can take hours just to form a single sentence.

Now, for me, poems are easier. But finding the right rhyming words is not. Somehow, 'confidence' and 'common-sense' rhyme, but 'cone' and 'done' don't!

While writing, you have to be careful about spellings too. I mean ‘sea’ and ‘see’ are very different. And an 'i' can 'ruin' a 'run'!

All of it should also make grammatical sense. And it's very important that the words you choose go with the story you are narrating or the thoughts that you are shaping in the poem.

'I love your dress' and 'The piece of clothing on your cage of flesh and bones is something I desire' mean the same thing but at the same time they really don't!

Not to mention rhythmic sense. For example :

In the poem “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star”,

If I replace 'little' with 'small' , then we would have to sing it my breaking the word 'small' like so:

Twinkle twinkle sma-al star

Doesn't that ruin it? It means the same. It's right grammatically, it doesn't bother the rhyme, but the rhythm is off!

You know, despite how hard writing is, it's very fun and very rewarding. And when you do find the right words, the satisfaction and the feeling of victory makes it all worthwhile.

"This is how you do it:

You sit down at the keyboard and you put one word after another until it's done. It's that easy, and that hard."

Something Neil Gaiman very rightly said.

So to all my dear writers, keep going despite it all! Don't let any obstacle discourage you, for it is yet another challenge that you can tame and conquer!

And all the best!
